Time Strategies

Image
This semester is pretty crazy busy for me.  With a new part time job, research project, and 16 class hours, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed.  Having a nice organized schedule is the only thing that is going to save me this semester.  For this class, I plan on splitting the weekly assignments between Tuesday and Thursday mornings and then doing some extra credit assignments on Fridays.  This work schedule fits in perfectly with what I have planned out for my other classes and work.   This week will be the first real class work week for me, so let's see how this goes.  I may be returning soon with a new schedule (or I may change things several times) Enjoy a little sunshine as the second week of classes start!

Class Asignments

As someone who took the Mythology and Folklore class last semester, I'm pretty familiar with the types of assignments in this class. I think this time, I may include more extra credit assignments in the beginning to have more freedom to do whichever assignments I enjoy later on. Last semester, I had to do all of the regular assignments and extra credit options for the last few weeks because I became super ill in the middle of the semester and fell behind.  For any new students this semester, work ahead when you can, because you never know what could happen. Enjoy a sunset picture I took in Norman last month, because we could all use a little sunshine in our lives after the first week of classes.

Growth Mindset

29 Ways to Stay Creative I think it is so easy for us to get stuck in a rut, following those around us and we loose sight of how to be unique.  This video gives us 29 examples of ways to start being creative and make something that is completely yourself.  I think I'm going to start trying these ideas out and find ways to stay unique and creative. Ken Robinson of Flourishing In this video, Ken Robinson discusses how easy it is to feel like we don't have any talents.  He says that this is often because we simply haven't found our talents, yet.  I think this is so true.  A huge part of growing up and growing into yourself is finding what you are good at.

Who is Caitlyn?

Hello!  I'm Caitlyn and I'm studying linguistics and minoring in Spanish.  Above is a picture of my boyfriend and I at Devil's Den in Arkansas.  He is my adventure buddy and we always find some really amazing places to go.  We both really love hiking and he introduced me to camping during spring break this last semester.  We have some more adventures planned for this semester and I will probably find a way to talk about them, so look for more posts about hiking and finding more beautiful sunsets. So, about my major...  I am fascinated by languages and everything about them.   If you are unfamiliar with linguistics, that’s totally fine.  Most people I encounter outside of my major don’t really know what it is either.  Linguistics is a sub-field of anthropology that focuses on language.  I really like the more technical aspects of my major. For example, I really love phonetics, a sub-field of linguistics.  This field focuses on the sounds of languages and how they ar

My Storybook Favorites

One of my favorites from the storybooks is Indra vs Thor and Zeus .  I'm a huge fan of Norse mythology, so the inclusion of Thor caught my eye.  I love how the author compared the different gods of thunder and lightning from different cultures to each other.  If you're really familiar with one culture's version of a god, understanding a different culture's version will come easier if you compare the similarities and differences between them.  This storybook's author did a fantastic job with this.  Their overall design is pretty basic, but it works well for the stories.  The intro gives us good background info before we jump into the stories. (Picture taken from The Rise of Indra in Indra vs Thor and Zeus storybook) King Author in India   was another storybook that caught my attention.  The author has a very nice design with images that really add to the story without distracting the readers.  I originally clicked on this one, because the title r

Finding My Favorite Place

Image
Last semester, I talked about my hammock in my parents' backyard as my favorite place.  Any time I am in my hammock in the trees, I am definitely happy.  But, I think in the past 6 months I have discovered a new favorite place. My boyfriend's parents live in a beautiful house on Lake Eufaula.  He and I go there often on the weekends to visit his parents and just get away from everything.  Their house overlooks the lake and they have a balcony on each level with a gorgeous view of the water.  This side of the house faces west, so each afternoon, we have the best view of the sunsets on the water.  My favorite place to watch them is on the little balcony up in the tower.  The view is incredible from up there and you feel like it's just you and the lake. I guess my favorite place is more of a moment.  That magical moment when the sun is just above the tree line on the opposite side of the lake.  When the sky is on fire with brilliant shades of pink, orange, red, and the be
